According to local media, the Japanese capital Tokyo registered a record high of 949 new Corona infections within 24 hours. Just the day before, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga urged the nation to stay home and avoid social contact in light of rising case numbers. During the New Year vacations, many citizens of the capital usually flock to the provinces.
The number of new coronavirus infections also remained high in South Korea. Within 24 hours, 1,132 new infections were registered, the disease center reported. Just the day before, the country had reported a high of 1,241 cases. “The virus spreads whenever and wherever it wants,” said Health Minister Kwon Deok-cheol.
